JILL POWERS
Creating with the natural material, Thai Kozo, inspires art that is bold and strong, and yet can be formed in translucent layers that cast beautiful shadows on the wall. In love with texture and light, I craft each piece with surface details that reveal the exquisite web of fibers from inside the Kozo bark. Working with the wet, cooked bark, I cast, layer, and pigment each element to build sculpture, or compositions that appear to float on the wall. When dry, the pieces have incredible strength and longevity. My art often explores the aesthetics and science of biological forms within ecological settings. Inspired by old scientific diagrams, and recent cutting edge research, I seek relevant subjects with aesthetic appeal, as well as having deeper meanings. I hope to foster awareness and understanding through art that explores the resilience of nature. A graduate of Tyler School of Art, Jill has shown her work internationally, and it is in private, corporate, and museum collections. Jill taught in the Visual Art Department at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado for twenty years. She has also taught in many other settings, including the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Oregon, the Honolulu Museum of Art in Hawaii, and at the Denver Botanic Gardens. www.jillpowers.com |
