ERIC WALL
Eric Wall, originally from Denver, Colorado, has spent over a decade residing in Cologne, Germany, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. During his time abroad, he was influenced by various Post-WWII secondary art movements. His work explores a diverse range of artistic styles, including Supports/Surfaces, Spatialism, Capitalist Realism, and contemporary painting. In Wall's paintings, he delves deeply into the materiality of the canvas, challenging conventional perceptions of the medium. Employing meticulous hand-cutting techniques with a hobby knife, each piece undergoes a transformative process involving stretching, painting, unstretching, cutting, repainting, and restretching. This iterative cycle often results in more canvas removed than retained, with the remaining swaths casting intriguing shadows on the surrounding walls, adding depth to his compositions. What sets Wall's work apart is his innovative integration of weaving and textiles into his recent paintings. By incorporating these unconventional materials, he expands the traditional boundaries of painting, blurring the lines between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms. This fusion of techniques not only enriches the visual and tactile experience of his artwork but also challenges viewers to reconsider the possibilities of the medium. Throughout his career, Wall has consistently pushed the boundaries of painting, demonstrating a bold willingness to experiment and explore new avenues of artistic expression. By embracing unconventional materials and techniques, he offers a fresh perspective on the potential of painting, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue about the evolving nature of contemporary art. www.ericwall.org |
