Artist Statement
I am more interested in the essence of a thing than its appearance. Although my work is grounded in tradition, it gains its momentum from experimentation. I choose steel as the support for my paintings as a material which is familiar to the contemporary observer, yet providing a reflective surface allowing light to emanate from within the piece itself, similar to an icon resonating within the soul of the believer. My interest in film as a source for much of my recent work provides opportunity to explore our relationship to the uncertainty of temporal and spatial relationships and the nature of memory and consciousness itself. |
